San Francisco

The morning dawned cold, windy and foggy. The only change from the previous night being that we could see the bridge in all its glory as we crossed it for the 3rd (but not final) time. What should have been a simple drive to drop the van off ended up being a full tour of downtown in rush hour due to an outdated SatNav. After a small detour to drop our luggage off at the Airbnb we made it safely to the depot and waved a fond farewell to Angular.

Our road trip took in 8709 miles, 71 days, 17 National Parks, 10 States, shamefully few showers making one incredible adventure and creating countless memories.

The Bay Area Rapid Transit system (fondly called Bart) proved to be easy to navigate and before long we were checked into the Airbnb enjoying the luxuries of non-van life, mainly proper furniture and decent WiFi. For those interested in the culinary side of things we enjoyed a delicious Creole lunch and a wondrous sourdough pizza. After checking the weather forecast we decided to delay our bike exploring until the following day, and so headed into Oakland where the evening went by with lots of competitiveness and giggles thanks to our discovery of an amusement arcade on the docks.

The next morning dawned brighter and far less foggy so we made the journey into downtown San Francisco. Once off Bart we joined the phenomenal queue for the cable cars and after squeezing aboard we slowly climbed up the hills and free-wheeled back down in a rickety little cable car until we reached our destination, the bike hire shop.

After cycling along the sea front via the sea organ we tackled the steep hill to the bridge then pedalled like mad to fight the wind along the bridge itself.

Happily it was downhill to Sausalito where we felt we had earned a restaurant meal, Amy opting for a steak and Mike the local Scallops. Happily full we joined the large queue of people waiting to board the ferry back to town. We sailed right past Alcatraz island, the closest we could get due to sold out tours, enjoying catching glimpses of dolphins and sea lions swimming in the bay.

After some last minute pre-Fiji shopping we caught the nighttime cable car service back to the Bart station, finally getting back to our Airbnb slightly later than planned. No lie-in for us the following day as we had planes to catch and places to be. The flight from San Francisco to LA was delayed, happily this meant we had enough time to watch a whole film rather than repeat the events of the flight to Canada where Mike missed the last 5 minutes. We had planned to catch up with the blog whilst waiting at LAX however the free WiFi was painfully slow and so we achieved very little. Finally we boarded the plane to Nadi, hoping to get a decent amount of sleep on the flight and VERY excited about our next destination.
