Toronto Part 1

Since our last post 5 days ago we have been very busy!

 We spent 2 nights at the Only Backpackers Inn which is a great hostel, it's attached to the Only Cafe which is a popular spot with locals for coffee and great beer (with great names, our favourite being Pompous Ass English Ale).

 We used this as our base to visit some well known Toronto attractions, first up was Casa Loma, North America's only Castle which has great views of the city.

 After a quick lunch stop it was back onto the subway to get to the CN tower, educational image below with an Amy for scale (bottom right corner of photo).



Minutes later we had shot up the glass-bottomed elevator to the top of the tower to take in the views (and for Mike to have his sunglasses blown off his head)

 We passed a notable milestone during this part of the trip... Amy bought some new sandals along with a few other bits and pieces which meant that the inevitable has happened, some of her stuff is now permanent resident of Mike's bag.

 This draws to a close the first part of our Toronto stay as we next headed to St. Catharines for a night on our way to Niagara Falls...

We've done so much since the last post, this will be a big one, you might want to make a brew! We arrived at our accommodation at 0130 and had been travelling in the dark (and through thick fog) for hours. When we woke in the morning the first thing we did was open the blinds to check the view, we were not disappointed! Accommodation

Today we have finalised our accommodation for the entire trip all the way to NZ :) Waking up this morning we had several gaps in our itinerary where we hadn't yet booked places to stay, there were a few days in Toronto, Vancouver and San Francisco which needed organising. The original plan was to use hostels almost exclusively but the prices (£30pppn!!! For an 8 bed dorm...) in the USA and Canada soon had us rethinking. We had already faced this challenge when booking accommodation in Banff and had eventually settled on a mediocre looking hotel. This was before we were enlightened to the wonders of Airbnb. We had a look at what may be available on Airbnb instead of the hotel and have "upgraded" (with a saving of £150!) to a full apartment with private HOT TUB and garden/bbq all with views of the mountains :D Further browsing on Airbnb led to bookings for 5 nights in Vancouver (before we pick up the van) and 3 nights in San Francisco (between van drop off and flying o...

Montana

So long Idaho, you've been great! Our first stop in Montana was at Lolo hot springs (a soak and a shower sounded too good to miss) where "NUDITY OF ANY KIND IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED (except Wed and Sun 9-12)", highly amusing! After a quick long stop in a rather excellent grocery store in Missoula we decided to head on up towards Seeley lake near Glacier national Park. On the way we got a bit distracted and ended up halfway up a mountain trying to find a ghost town, the view down into the valley and spotting of a snowshoe hare made the lack of a non-flooded campsite worthwhile. The ghost town of Garnet was, like most ghost towns, settled by miners during the gold rush era. This town was unique in that it was very family friendly so lacked the vices of other towns. The mine works were all still there (complete with hazardous shafts!) and the town is relatively complete and undamaged by wild fire. You can even rent some of the cabins in the winter!  ...
